Systems (Upper part Systems and Lower part Drivers)
The first part of profound knowlege is knowledge of systems
This video introduces the team to a very basic question: "What is a system?"
Answers to this question as well as the follow up, "What is the aim of a system?" can be very revealing.
It also answers the question, "How to catch a mouse?".

A System
Has an aim
Has processes to reach the aim
Makes common sense a problem when used in the system (Every dysfunctional system that you use is the result of someone using common sense!)
Has boundaries
Has limitations if one part of the system is unwilling to take a loss for the whole system to do better
Has to have management responsible for the total system
Not be in the system but to be responsible for it
Aim of Patients for Their Care Givers
Focus on suffering
Build and use knowledge
Cooperate with each other
So I do not wait
So you can tell me things right away
So that you all speak in one voice and so I get one answer
Help me to live longer and have well being
Help me so I die less lonely and less afraid
Listen to me because I may know some things that will help you
Do things only once
From Don Berwick's book Escape Fire
It is a wonderful book Escape the Fire. He asks the patients what they want.
These are a good way of making sure your priorities match our patients

How to Describe your system:
MAPPING DRIVERS
1. A Really cool way to map out processes is by using drivers. Go to Excel, Click insert Smart art icon
2. Click on hierarchy
3. Click on horizontal hierarchy
4. On the first box type your aim
5. On the second column type in the 2-7 primary drivers (There is an outline view)
6. On the third column type in the other drivers
BELOW SHOWS THE DRIVE DIAGRAM DONE BY IHI OPEN SCHOOL
